The Optimate 4 is here to breathe new life into your tired, old batteries and save you some money at the same time. It might've taken 13 years to develop but it was definitely worth the wait.

This high quality battery optimiser works with 12V lead-acid batteries up to 50Ah and promises to significantly increase the life span of each and every battery it charges, unless the battery is already dead.

Sealed maintenance-free, "flooded" types with filler caps or gel - you name it, the Optimate 4 can probably revive it.

Tecmate's Optimate products have been used and recommended time and time again by the major motorbike manufacturers who test and assess maintenance chargers on a daily basis and this latest product won't be an exception. Since its launch, the Optimate 4 has already been snapped up by over a million happy customers and has been given the full seal of approval by 9 major manufacturers.

The Optimate 4 looks better than any other Optimate product that we've been previously been offered and is controlled by a mini-processor, making it more effective than any of its predecessors. It boasts a swanky LED screen and has a new dual stage RECOVERY and TURBO RECOVERY mode. The RECOVERY mode serves for batteries which are only slightly neglected, while the TURBO RECOVERY mode serves for batteries which are seriously on their last legs.

It comes complete with 2 connection leads with a fused connection lead with eyelet terminals and a battery clamp and clip cord set.

Now for the science; Like all the Optimate products before it, the Optimate 4 charges the battery before checking it is as fully charged as it can be. It then checks and detects dead battery cells.

The Optimate 4 really comes into its own when it's used for battery maintenance in long-term storage. The device's maintenance cycle allows the battery to rest every 30 minutes of every hour that the cycle is ongoing.

The clever multi-stage programme automatically jumps into life as soon as the Optimate 4 is attached to a 12V battery that has at least 2V remaining. It then scans to see if the battery has enough voltage to run the programme.

If the Optimate 4 decides the battery is deep-discharged ("sulphated") the programme will kick into TURBO mode at a voltage of up to 22V at a low current for up to 2 hours until the battery is bought back to a stage where it can charge normally. Similarly, for neglected batteries the Optimate 4 uses the recovery mode and limits the voltage to 16V.

Once the circuit detects that the battery is back to a stage where it can be charged normally it enforces the "bulk charge" mode and delivers a constant current of 0.8A until the battery is fully charged.

I have been using an Optimate III for several years on each of the bikes I have owned. It was recommended by my local Piaggio/Gilera Dealer. Each Winter, the bike I owned at the time, was kept on constant charge. Each bike started first time every time. This Winter has been more severe than others, and my bike continues to start first time. Also, having the Optimate/Accumate Cigar Lighter accessory allows me to use other pieces of kit, for example, a tyre air compressor. The Optimate gives peace of mind. Well worth the price.

Nice piece of kit but the sysytem of flashing/non flashing LEDs ( 10 or more of them) is far to complicated. All you really need is a YES the battery is fine, OK BUT going downhill, or a NO this battery is dead beyond recovery. With the Mk3 I didnt have to keep refering to the booklet to see what was going on!

This has been recommended to me by a few people, so i decided to buy one, reason being i only commute a few miles every day and through winter, so i thought it best to keep my battery well maintained. I received it today and attached it to my battery (My motorbike is an SV650s) within 30 mins, with a permanent attachment supplied (it has a rubber seal so no water can get in) it makes it very easy to attach quickly. My battery was charged and maintained with in a few hours, and has seemed to make starting the bike much easier! Thanks, defo recommended! The technology inside means you are able to leave it on for days without the worry of overcharging your battery. The only reason i didn’t give this product 5*’s is because of the confusing LED display, and constantly having to refer to the manual to understand what it means!!

I have always used an Optimate for keeping my bike and car batteries in good condition and have found that they last longer and in top condition in service than expected. I have a patient with an intermittantly used electric wheelchair and needed a better charger than the one supplied with it. The Optimate was, and had to be the first choice and ,to date, has proved to be.
